Abstract
Giovanni Nesi, born in Florence in January 1456 and dead in the same town in 1506, mirrors the troubled sequence of a generation of Florentine intellectuals that saw Plato and Platonism undermine Aristotle and merge with the Hermetic tradition, and that spanned the ideological and political trim of Lorenzo the Magnificent’s age, to participate later in the great reforming hope of Savonarola’s years, to be overwhelmed, again, by the defeat of Savonarola in 1498, and finally to attend at the beginning of the new century the definitive crisis of Florentine society.
