Abstract

The Aldine Press was one of the foremost humanist publishing enterprises in the Renaissance. The firm was founded by Aldus Manutius the Elder in partnership with Andrea Torresano and aimed to publish the canon of classical antiquity. While the partners were soon forced to diversity production, the prestige and cultural cachet of the press were unmatched. The press was supported by popes, kings, and prominent individuals for much of its lifetime. Aldine editions were among the most valued in Christendom, both for their textual accuracy (though this was not always reliable, as scholars soon discovered), for their role in bringing unpublished texts to light, and for their brand value. In its later years, the press declined due to the mismanagement of the last member of the Manuzio family to be involved in the printing world – Aldo Manuzio the Younger.
