Abstract

Pierre Charron made an important contribution to French sixteenth-century thought, partly because of his controversial skepticism. His Traité de la sagesse enjoyed extraordinary popularity, especially in the circles of the erudite libertines of the first half of the seventeenth century, who championed its skeptical aspects and the criticism of prejudice. Charron’s skepticism takes the form of an acute criticism of all dogmatism and philosophical and religious fanaticism.
