Abstract
John Ponet was a Marian exile whose political work, A Shorte Treatise of Politike Power (1556), laid the foundation for the development of political philosophy when it applied a secularizing perspective to bear upon the political implications of the radical Reformation tradition. Writing to encourage rebellion against the Marian regime, Ponet influentially espoused the idea that monarchs receive their authority from the people and can be deposed if they fail to secure and maintain the well-being of society.
