Comedy in Renaissance Literature

Abstract

After centuries of condemnation by the Church, classical comedies were revived and staged in Latin or in translation at the courts and cities of the fifteenth century. However, in the sixteenth-century original theatrical productions in the vernacular appeared and flourished (mainly before the public of the courts), aiming to represent reality and its demystification with the aid of contaminatio between different literary genres.
