Definition

Ocean tide loading comprises the observable effects of surface mass loading due to oceanic tides. Effects include deformation of the body of the planet and perturbation of its gravity field. Owing to the origin, ocean tides, the effects of ocean loading cover temporal scales of hours to 18.6 years and appear to be periodic.

Loading Problems in General

The range of loading effects is wide. In general, traction forces (for instance) are applied on a certain area, and the body responds by deformation. Sorting the problem into categories, distinctions would consider whether the scale is small, so that a flat-earth approximation would be sufficient, or whether the whole body of the earth is involved and to what degree the structure in interior can be considered uniform or variable, or variable only along the radial direction. The forcing may occur at the surface or at depth, maybe by surface tractions...
