## Introduction

The use of (digital) technologies in mathematics and in mathematics education is related but not the same. Already in ancient times, people used “machines” like the abacus or the soroban to support doing calculations. And, from the seventeenth century onward, the inventions of mechanical calculation machines and electronic calculators or the use of computers or smartphones aimed at sparing people the tedious trouble of calculating in mathematics.

Obviously, in mathematics education, where acquiring calculation skills is still an important objective, each of these inventions sets of a discussion on the admittance of the device in mathematics classrooms (i.e., Waits and Demana 2000; Herget et al. 2000). Now, there is more or less an understanding that the use of technology in mathematics classrooms depends on the situation.
