Electronic Geophysical Year
eGY. Electronic Geophysical Year. An international science year (2007–2008) celebrating the IGY + 50 anniversary that focused on increasing access to scientific data and information for all people.
Introduction and Concept
Sharing scientific data and information for the common good has long been at the heart of good scientific practice. For the geosciences, the outstandingly successful International Geophysical Year, 1957–1958 (IGY), was a watershed moment in international data sharing. During IGY, in addition to initiating much new research, scientists and member countries worked together to emplace numerous geophysical observatories around the globe and establish a network of World Data Centers for archiving data and for making data available without restrictions.
