Abstract

Subcutaneous immunotherapy, a type of allergen immunotherapy, is an effective and disease-modifying treatment in patients who have suffered from allergic rhinitis with or without conjunctivitis and/or asthma and who demonstrate specific IgE antibodies to the relevant allergens. Indications of subcutaneous immunotherapy for respiratory allergies include patients who are poorly responsive to pharmacotherapies, not tolerable to medications because of side effects, and sometimes even considered for primary allergy prevention. Subcutaneous immunotherapy requires a buildup phase as the allergen content is increased until a therapeutic “desensitization” level is achieved and usually continues for 3 to 5 years. Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies have shown that subcutaneous immunotherapy is an effective treatment for allergic rhinitis and/or asthma. Even with newer therapies on the horizon, subcutaneous immunotherapy will continue to have an important role in the management of allergic diseases.
