Glossary

Caving zone:

The completely collapsed part of the overlying rock in response to mining. The rock has the characteristics of irregularity, bulking property, and poor density. The caving zone is not effective in preventing water from entering the mining area.

Draft zone of confined water:

Refers to the upward penetration height of water from the confined aquifer into the geologic barrier along fissures or fractures in the floor.

Floor rock pressure failure zone:

Due to mining-induced stresses, the floor rock is continuously destroyed, resulting in a rock failure zone. Hydraulic conductivity increases significantly in the altered rock formation.

Goaf water:

Water in old excavated roadways, abandoned mines, and caves. The water pressure is generally large. Once exposed, the goaf water can suddenly gush into active mining areas, resulting in mass destruction. Water gushing may be accompanied with emission of harmful gases. The gushing water duration is typically short.
