Definition

The term NeuroAIDS encompasses all the neurological complications associated with HIV. This includes diseases that primarily result from direct infection of the CNS with HIV (HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders [HAND]), secondary conditions resulting either from the effects of associated immunocompromise (neurologic opportunistic infections or tumors) or the effects of treatment (such as the immune reconstitution syndrome [IRIS]) as well as other diseases that could be influenced but not caused by HIV (e.g., stroke).

Types of HIV-Associated Neurological Syndromes

  • Primary HIV neurological diseases

    • HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND)

      • Asymptomatic neurocognitive impairment (ANI)

      • Mild neurocognitive disorder (MND)

      • HIV-associated dementia (HAD)

    • Aseptic meningitis

    • HIV-associated myelopathy

    • HIV-associated peripheral neuropathies

      • Distal symmetric polyneuropathy (DSP)

      • Inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (IDPN)

  • Secondary or opportunistic neurological diseases
