Definition
The term NeuroAIDS encompasses all the neurological complications associated with HIV. This includes diseases that primarily result from direct infection of the CNS with HIV (HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders [HAND]), secondary conditions resulting either from the effects of associated immunocompromise (neurologic opportunistic infections or tumors) or the effects of treatment (such as the immune reconstitution syndrome [IRIS]) as well as other diseases that could be influenced but not caused by HIV (e.g., stroke).
Types of HIV-Associated Neurological Syndromes
Primary HIV neurological diseases
HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND)
Asymptomatic neurocognitive impairment (ANI)
Mild neurocognitive disorder (MND)
HIV-associated dementia (HAD)
Aseptic meningitis
HIV-associated myelopathy
HIV-associated peripheral neuropathies
Distal symmetric polyneuropathy (DSP)
Inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (IDPN)
Secondary or opportunistic neurological diseases
