Acetaldehyde::

Intermediate metabolite in the Saccharomyces cerevisiae ethanol pathway with the chemical composition CH3CHO.

Alpha-amylase::

A protein-based enzyme that hydrolyzes or breaks down the structure of long-chain polysaccharides yielding shorter-chain molecules.

Anhydrous::

A substance that is free of water.

Atmospheric distillation::

The separation of components by selective boiling and condensation using a process operating at or near atmospheric pressure.

Azeotrope::

A mixture of two or more liquids whose proportions cannot be changed by simple distillation.

Azeotropic distillation::

A distillation process in which a third liquid entrainer is used to produce a new, lower boiling point azeotrope effectively breaking the original azeotrope.

C4 stream::

A petroleum refinery stream high in butanes (four-carbon hydrocarbons).

Clean-in-place (CIP)::

A method for cleaning the inside of pipes, vessels, and process equipments without disassembly using heat, water, and dilute...
