Definition

Neurological manifestations of HIV-2 include neurocognitive dysfunction and peripheral neuropathy. They may include primary complications caused by the HIV-2 virus or secondary complications due to opportunistic illnesses or toxicity of therapy that develops during chronic HIV-2 infection.

Neurological Disease from Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Infection

One of the most underappreciated aspects of retroviral infection has been the serious neurological complications that commonly occur. In the case of HIV-1, it is known that shortly after infection, the virus enters the nervous system and can be recovered from it at almost any time during the ongoing years of infection. As immune dysfunction develops, there is increasing prevalence of both neurocognitive decline and peripheral neuropathy.
