Definition

Crosshatched lineated and striated regolith texture on sloping and horizontal surfaces.

Synonyms

Elephant hide texture; Leathery texture

Description

Fine-scale wrinkle texture (lineations and striations). Striations frequently follow contours of surface topography, but there are generally several orientations of striations, with one dominant orientation and another more subdued orientation (Mattingly and El-Baz 1973).

Formation Models

  1. (1)

Creep: formed by the slow, cumulative downslope movement of the regolith caused by micrometeorite impacts (Pleascia and Robinson 2010). This model does not explain the occurrence of the texture in horizontal surfaces (Mattingly and El-Baz 1973; Antonenko 2012).

  2. (2)

Seismic shaking: reworking of unconsolidated regolith driven by horizontal surface oscillations generated by impacts that produce craters greater than 1 km in diameter, affecting a zone up to 10 crater radii away (Schultz and Gault 1975; Antonenko 2012). This is the most widely...
