Definition

Periodic and constant width, parallel to subparallel continuous and discontinuous lineaments or ridges on Mars, which may or may not show discernable aligned boulders.

Synonyms

Aligned/organized boulders (Banks et al. 2008); Corduroy texture (Malin and Edgett 2001); Lineated basketball terrain; Lineated boulder piles; Organized stripes (Mellon et al. 2008); Slope stripes and striated soils (Mangold 2005)

Subtypes by Setting

  1. (1)

Hillslope stripes occur between 55° and 75° N/S, on the same zone as high-latitude polygons. Transition from regular polygonal or circular pattern to periodic stripes on ~5° to 7° gradient hillslopes was observed on MOC images (Mangold 2005 and references therein) (Fig. 1a). This texture is referred to as wrinkled by Kostama et al. (2003). No stripe-forming organized boulders are visible at HiRISE resolution (Fig. 1b, c).

Gallagher et al. (2011) identified clastic stripes in HiRISE images in and around Heimdal crater. In clastic stripes, parallel...
