Solitude, featureless land, Latin.

History of Nomenclature

Introduced by Antoniadi (1934), who applied this term to “desertlike” dark to gray patches, taking into account “the desert condition and the enormous amount of heat received by the planet” (Antoniadi 1934[1974], p. 32). Note that bright albedo features have no generic term.
