Definition

100s to over 1,000 km long, >1 km wide channels that exhibit complex morphology with some sections composed of multiple braided or anastomosing channels and streamlined mid-channel islands, on Venus (Baker et al. 1991, 1992; Komatsu et al. 1993).

Category

A type of compound lava channel

Synonyms

Outflow complex

Description

The first known example (Parker et al. 1991; Baker et al. 1992; Komatsu et al. 1993), later named Kallistos Vallis (Kargel et al. 1994; Baker et al. 1997), originates at a chaotically collapsed source region (Chaotic Terrain, Venus) and shows streamlined islands or bars and anastomosing or braided reaches. These are the morphological properties similar to some of Martian outflow channels (Parker et al. 1991; Baker et al. 1992), thus the informal name “outflow channel” was given to Kallistos Vallis (Baker et al. 1992; Komatsu and Baker 1996; Komatsu 2007). Some researchers (Kargel et al. 1994) expanded the application of the name outflow channels to other...
