Category

A type of mountain on Io.

Description

Mountains of volcanic origin include several hundred very low shield-like volcanoes (paterae) and very few steep-sided shield volcanoes and cones (Schenk et al. 2004). Several of the volcanic centers are observed to be active (e.g., Morabito et al. 1979).

Subtypes

  1. (1)

Steep-sided shield volcanoes (Schenk et al. 2004) with surface slopes greater than 1° (Williams et al. 2011):

  2. (2)

Low shield volcanoes (Schenk et al. 2004), p. 425 paterae (volcano-tectonic depressions) that include several active volcanic centers (Io). Most of these have very shallow slopes of 0.1° and maximum elevations of about 2 km (Williams et al. 2011).

Formation, Composition

These are volcanic mountains of presumably silicate or sulfur-rich materials (Williams et al. 2011).
