Definition
A very large dark area on the moon (IAU Gazetteer 2014).
Note: The IAU Working Group for Planetary System Nomenclature “recognized that the term Oceanus was suitable for use in its present application on the moon but that there was little likelihood of the need for this term in conjunction with new names” (Müller and Jappel (1977).

Global sea; Latin; from Ōkeanós: world ocean or a river that flowed around the Earth; ancient Greek.
