Definition
Immunodeficiency refers to conditions characterized by recurrent or difficult to treat infections. These conditions can be primary, due to inherent defects in the immune system or secondary, caused by extrinsic factors that suppress the immune response. This chapter reviews the clinical presentation of immunodeficiencies.
Introduction
Immunodeficiencies are conditions that render an individual more susceptible to recurrent, severe, or unusual infections. Immunodeficiencies may be primary or secondary. Primary immunodeficiencies are typically defined by an inherited genetic defect affecting immune function (Bonilla et al. 2014). With advanced genetic sequencing techniques, primary immunodeficiency diseases are being defined at a rapid pace, numbering more than 300 (Picard et al. 2015).
