Definition

Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) is a hypersensitivity reaction characterized by recurrent episodes of worsening obstructive lung disease, mucoid impaction, and increased respiratory symptoms in patients who have either asthma or cystic fibrosis (CF), are sensitized to Aspergillus fumigatus, and meet established diagnostic criteria.

Background

Aspergillus fumigatus is a ubiquitous mold that is found both indoor and outdoor. It is present in the air we breathe but also in soil and other outdoor environments that are predisposed to the growth of mold, such as decaying vegetation and mulch, as well as in humid areas like crawl spaces, compost piles, and sewage treatment facilities (Slavin et al. 1988; Paris et al. 1997).
