Definition

Hemozoin, a chemically inert, insoluble crystalline dimer of ferriprotoporphyrin IX, is intrinsic to malaria parasite metabolism and has unique optical and magnetic properties which make it an attractive biomarker for malaria diagnostics. Hemozoin has been detected in blood samples using various spectroscopic, magneto-optic, optical scattering, and nonlinear optical methods.

Background

Malaria is a mosquito-borne parasite that infects nearly 220 million people worldwide, causing ~ 1 million deaths/year, many of whom are African children. Accurate and cost-effective diagnostics are an important component of efforts to reduce the malaria burden. Today, malaria is typically diagnosed by microscopic identification of the parasite or by lateral flow immunological assays similar to pregnancy tests.
