Definition
Query optimization is the process of producing a query evaluation plan (QEP) for a query that minimizes or maximizes certain objective functions. A query in a sensor network has additional clauses that specify the life time of a query, the frequency in which the sensor data should be monitored, and even the rate in which query answers should be returned. As such, the query plan must reflect these. In addition, a typical query plan comprises two main components: a communication component that sets up the communication structure for data delivery and a computation component that performs the operation in the sensor network and/or the root node. Because sensor nodes are low-powered, besides minimizing computation cost, optimization criterion includes minimizing energy consumption (e.g., by minimizing transmission cost) or maximizing the life span of the entire sensor network.
