Abstract

Surgical management continues to provide the mainstay of treatment for patients with early melanoma. In this chapter the authors describe the surgical approach to primary cutaneous melanoma lesions, including sentinel lymph node biopsy. These techniques are not only potentially curative but also provide the prognostic information necessary for subsequent treatment decisions. The current recommendations for the surgical management of early melanoma based on randomized prospective clinical trials, as well as future directions, are reviewed.
