Definition

The International Union of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology (IUPHAR) nomenclature of ion channels is an agreed standard for naming the voltage-gated and ligand-gated ion channels encoded in the genomes of human, mouse, and rat. The nomenclature is based on functional characteristics and structural protein motifs.

Detailed Description

Overview of Channel Naming

In rat, mouse, and human, there are over 140 channel subunits in the superfamily of voltage-gated-like ion channels and over 70 types of ligand-gated ion channel subunits. Typically, a subunit has many names, reflecting the history of its discovery and subsequent investigation. The IUPHAR Committee on Receptor Nomenclature and Drug Classification has worked to produce a unified nomenclature of the channel subtypes, which is designed to indicate the function of the ion channel. This scheme is also called clone nomenclature, as the properties of subunits are measured by heterologous expression...
