Definition

Neuropathic pain (NP) is a direct consequence of lesions or disease affecting the central or peripheral somatosensory system. Peripheral nerve interfaces are systems for delivery of therapeutic modalities directly to the peripheral nervous system, such as the management of NP.

Detailed Description

Pain is a subjective feeling of physical suffering and discomfort from the sensory modality of nociception (pain perception) by activation of terminal receptors. A direct activation of pain pathways can also result in the perception of pain without extrinsic activation of end receptors. Such “neuropathic pain” may be caused by disease or injury. The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) defined NP as “pain caused by a lesion or disease of the somatosensory system” (IASP 2011; Jensen et al. 2011).
