Definition
Cardiology is a medical specialty of the structure, function, and disorders of the heart. Traditionally, cardiology has mainly focused on the heart; however, more recently, the field of cardiology has expanded into the study and disorders of the arteries and veins, as well as other organs such as the brain (i.e., stroke or transient ischemia attack) or kidney (i.e., cardiorenal syndrome). This is probably due to a common underlying pathophysiology of disease. As such, cardiology has recently involved areas of medicine typically associated with other specialties (such as neurologists, nephrologists, etc.).
