Definition

Clinicians and other health personnel can influence public health outcomes through physical activity counseling in health settings. However, counseling alone is often not sufficient for the adoption of sustained, long-term physical activity habits. A more comprehensive framework is needed for implementing behavior change strategies throughout the entire patient visit to a healthcare setting. This framework provides an organized, systems-change approach for busy clinicians and their healthcare teams who may have had little formal training in physical activity counseling and face multiple institutional barriers. This approach is guided by lessons learned from decades of experience integrating of physical activity counseling in health settings around the world.
