Integration in special education refers to the practice of including children with disabilities with their nondisabled peers in the educational setting. Prior to the enactment of IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act) in 1975 (then known as The Education for All handicapped Children Act, P.L.94–142), many children with disabilities were segregated from their peers in the educational setting and taught in separate classrooms, separate programs, separate schools, or left at home. IDEA not only mandates a free and appropriate education (FAPE) for all children with disabilities but also includes a mandate, that to the maximum extent appropriate, students with disabilities should be educated with their nondisabled peers (20 U.S.C.1415[5][B]) in what is referred to as the least restrictive environment (LRE) .
