Emergent literacy is the stage of reading development that precedes conventional reading. Children are in the emergent literacy stage from birth to about 6 years old. During this stage, children are being exposed to experiences that will increase their knowledge and abilities in emergent literacy skills. Emergent literacy skills include alphabet knowledge, print-concept knowledge, phonological awareness, and narrative skills. For children who are typically developing, researchers have found that emergent literacy skills are strong predictors of later success with reading. There is an emerging body of research on emergent literacy and its role in the acquisition of conventional literacy skills for children with autism. Several common findings have emerged across the literature.
