Description

The Strong Narrative Assessment Procedure (SNAP; Strong 1998) is an individually administered criterion-based method to measure various skills related to narrative discourse. Children from kindergarten to 8th grade are the appropriate candidates to be administered the SNAP. The SNAP assessment is divided into multiple steps; children recall relevant details of stories, summarize the stories, and answer questions that assess comprehension of the stories following specific instructions. Flexibility in transitioning between verbal and written language is required by students who are administered the SNAP. The ultimate goal of this assessment is to provide an approach to treatment that will support children when engaging in positive social interactions.

Although the targeted age groups for the SNAP procedures are children aged 6–13 years, comparison data are available only for children aged 7–10 years. SNAP is administered using tape recordings as well as...
