Definition
Fluoxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) commonly used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), bulimia nervosa, panic disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), among other disorders (Wenthur et al. 2013). Some research suggests that fluoxetine can be used to treat repetitive behaviors in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD); however, findings are inconsistent and placebo-controlled studies are scarce (Accordino et al. 2016).
Fluoxetine (molecular formula: C17H18F3NO) is an oral formulation commonly known by the brand name Prozac. It was discovered by Eli Lilly and Company in 1972 and was the first SSRI to be approved for medical use by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1987.
