Mechanisms of Action
Lamotrigine is an anticonvulsant. It works by inhibiting voltage-activated sodium channels, antagonizes N-type calcium channels, and also has antiglutamatergic action. The antiglutaminergic effect is thought to be through inhibition of sodium, calcium, and potassium channels leading to decreased release of the excitatory amino acid glutamate. While there are studies to show potential favorable effects on cognition and mood stabilization, there is currently insufficient evidence to support the use of lamotrigine in Autism Spectrum Disorder
Specific Compounds and Properties
Lamotrigine is an antiepileptic drug of the phenyltriazine class.
