Introduction
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common functional gastrointestinal disorders affecting between 10 % and 20 % of adults in the industrialized world. People suffering from IBS report more ailments than the general population and commonly incur a diminution in their quality of life. IBS is defined by abdominal pain, gas, bloating or discomfort, rectal hypersensitivity, and altered bowel habits. However, these characteristics are shared with a number of other gastrointestinal disorders. IBS is therefore commonly identified by its characteristics and through elimination of organic gastrointestinal disorders such as irritable bowel disease (IBD) and celiac disease. There are four main types of IBS as defined by their characteristics: IBS with constipation (IBS-C), IBS with diarrhea (IBS-D), IBS with an alternating subtype (IBS-A), and IBS that is un-subtyped (IBS-U)
