Definitions
Microbiota: The microbial community or bacterial flora living in a region.
Microbiome: The collective microbes comprising a microbiota.
Metagenomics: Analysis or study based on genomic sequences obtained by sequencing the microbiome.
OTU: Abbreviation of “operational taxonomic unit” that is a measure for classifying microbes based on a percent similarity threshold of bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequences.
Dysbiosis (Dysbacteriosis): An imbalance in the bacterial composition and diversity of a microbiota often associated with various illnesses and inflammation.
Enterotype: A classification of gut microbiota based on its bacterial composition.
