Definition

Characterization of changes in the fecal microbiome in dogs suffering from idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or acute hemorrhagic diarrhea (AHD).

Introduction

In dogs, chronic enteropathies (CE) describe a range of chronic diseases of the intestines regardless of etiology or pathogenesis. Idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a subset of chronic enteropathies and is described as any condition associated with the presence of chronic (>3 weeks) gastrointestinal signs, inflammatory infiltration of the GI tract, and where a specific etiology cannot be identified (Simpson and Jergens 2011). Dogs with idiopathic IBD do not respond to dietary treatment approaches or antibiotic trials, and these dogs typically require immune-suppressive treatment.

Dogs may develop an acute onset of hemorrhagic diarrhea (AHD). There are several potential causes of AHD, including infectious organisms and/or their...
