Definitions
Simians: higher primates including Old and New World monkeys and great apes.
Prosimians: an informal grouping of primates consisting of those belonging to the primate suborder Strepsirrhini and the tarsiers of the suborder Haplorhini.
Hominids: any of the modern or extinct bipedal primates of the family Hominidae, including all species of the genera Homo and Australopithecus.
Introduction
Microbial organisms account for a substantial portion of Earth biomass and live in intimate association with their vertebrate and invertebrate hosts. Humans and nonhuman primates (NHPs), like other mammals, live in this microbe-dominated world; therefore, microbial communities have direct impact on the health and disease and ultimately evolution of primates and other living organisms (Yeoman et al. 2011).
