Canali (Venus)

A simple Venusian channel, distinguishable from a sinuous rille by a longer meander wavelength and radius of curvature (Baker et al. 1992; Komatsu and Baker 1994a). Venusian canali are some of the longest continuous channels in the solar system.

Plural Form

Canali is a non-countable noun but some researchers use canali as plural and canale as singular.


Canali are “simple” channels (Komatsu et al. 1993; Fig. 1): they generally lack tributaries and extensive lateral flow deposits. Some canali display cutoff meanders (oxbows), abandoned channel segments, chute cutoff (Fig. 2), braiding, point bars (meander scroll ridges/scroll bars) and deltas, characteristics of erosion, and sediment transport. Localized braiding and the presence of  levees along the length of some canali have been noted, which indicates that sediment was deposited there (Williams-Jones et al. 1998; Lang and Hansen 2006...
