Introduction
The definition of templates originates from coordination chemistry and supramolecular science. The more modern use of the term template describes a molecular entity that brings structures together in a manner which would not happen in a non-templated fashion. This will result in a specific interaction or selective chemical transformation. In most examples, the template will be incorporated, but this is not necessarily the case [1, 2]. Electrodes and their surfaces may also be considered as two-dimensional templates [3]. Since only the electrosynthetic aspects will be treated here, they are not part of this survey.
The templates can be covalently bound to the electrophores/substrates and serve as tethers or are more weakly attached to the reaction partners by coordinative bonds. In electroorganic synthesis, this concept was successfully applied and demonstrated in several cases.
