Introduction

Wastewater contains in general a variety of organic pollutants; analysis of these pollutants and their degradation products during treatment is a complex matter. In order to avoid this problem, global parameters are frequently used.

Depending on the wastewater treatment technique used, different global parameters have been employed. In chemical treatment using strong oxidants like O3, H2O2/Fe+2, etc., TOC (Total Organic Carbon) and COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) are frequently used.

In biological wastewater treatment, the 5-day Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD5) is the main parameter used.

These parameters are not specific for the chemical nature of the organic pollutants present in the wastewater. They can, however, allow estimation of the extent (concentration) of pollution and evaluation of treatment efficiency.
