n The dielectric constant, dependent on wavelength, is simply the square of the complex refractive index in a nonmagnetic medium, one with a relative permeability of unity. The refractive index is used for optics in Fresnel equations and Snell’s law while the dielectric constant is used in Maxwell’s equations and electronics.
