n (1839) The index of refraction of a material is the ratio of the velocity of the light in a vacuum to that of the specimen; it is expressed as a ratio of the sine of the angle of incidence to the sine of the angle of refraction; it is used as a measure of purity, identification and optical design (ASTM D 542).
