n A chemical compound or other material in which one or more of the ordinary atoms have been replaced by their radioactive isotopes. Carbon-14, tritium (hydrogen-3), and iodine-131 are among the isotopes that have been used in this way. The tracer isotopes have been useful in elucidating chemical-reaction mechanisms and in tracking human and animal metabolisms.
