An abrupt breaking of a material in which there is very little or no elongation or distortion of the part before failure. In a tensile test, the stress-strain graph is nearly linear to the breaking point. (Grellman W, Seidler S (eds.) (2001) Deformation and fracture behavior of polymers. Springer, New York).
