n (1861) CH3OH. An impure alcohol historically obtained from the destructive distillation (pyrolysis in the absence of air) of wood, whose main constituent was  Methanol. Today, methanol is synthesized from carbon monoxide and hydrogen. It is toxic and is used as a denaturant in ethanol to make it impotable.
