n (1) C6H5N3. A double ring compound, parent to many derivatives. (2) Any of a family of UV stabilizers, derivatives of 2-(2′-hydroxyphenyl)benzotriazole, that function primarily as UV absorbers. Typical examples are 2-(2′-hydroxy-5′-methylphenyl) benzotriazole and the corresponding 5′-t-octylphenyl analog. The benzotriazoles offer intense and broad UV absorption with a fairly sharp wavelength cutoff close to the visible region. The higher alkyl derivatives are less volatile and therefore more suitable for processing at higher temperatures. Open image in new window
