\ben-▐zō-ik-\ n [ISV] (1791) (carboxybenzene, benzene carboxylic acid, phenylformic acid) C6H5COOH. A white, crystalline compound occurring naturally in benzoin gum and some berries, also synthesized from phthalic acid or toluene. It is used in making plasticizers such as 2-ethylhexyl-p-oxybenzoate,diethyleneglycol dibenzoate, dipropyleneglycol dibenzoate, ethyleneglycol dibenzoate, triethyleneglycol dibenzoate, polyethyleneglycol-(200)- and -(600)-dibenzoate, and benzophenone. It has a mp of 121°C, a by of 249°C, and an acid value of 460. It is a useful peptizing agent for metallic soaps, either in their solid form or in hydrocarbon solutions.
