\ben-▐zō-ik-\ n [ISV] (1791) (carboxybenzene, benzene carboxylic acid, phenylformic acid) C6H5COOH. A white, crystalline compound occurring naturally in benzoin gum and some berries, also synthesized from phthalic acid or toluene. It is used in making plasticizers such as 2-ethylhexyl-p-oxybenzoate,diethyleneglycol dibenzoate, dipropyleneglycol dibenzoate, ethyleneglycol dibenzoate, triethyleneglycol dibenzoate, polyethyleneglycol-(200)- and -(600)-dibenzoate, and benzophenone. It has a mp of 121°C, a by of 249°C, and an acid value of 460. It is a useful peptizing agent for metallic soaps, either in their solid form or in hydrocarbon solutions. It is sometimes effective in reducing seeding, especially in spirit enamel containing small amounts of basic pigments.
