n The practice of compounding into a brittle plastic 5–20% of a rubber in the form of spherical particles, in order to improve the plastic’s resistance to impact. The process has been used with both thermoplastics and thermosets, e.g., polystyrene and epoxies. Some users of this term include toughening achieved by copolymerization with elastomer-forming monomers.
