\rō-tә-mē-tәr, ro-ta-mә-tәr\ n [L rota + English –meter] (1907) A simple flow-measuring device for gases and low-viscosity liquids consisting of a vertical glass tube whose internal diameter increases gradually from bottom to top, graduated on the outside, and consisting a float that reaches an equilibrium position that rises in proportion to the flow rate. By calculation or calibration, the flow rate can be derived from the float position and the pressure and temperature of the fluid at the discharge end. Floats of small rotameters may be simple spheres interchangeable with others of different density to expand the instrument’s range.
