Romania is an East European country, with a total surface of 237,500 km2 and a population of 21,680,974 inhabitants according to the 2002 census. The capital of Romania is Bucharest. Romania is bordered by Ukraine and Republic of Moldavia to the North-East, Bulgaria to the South, Hungary to the North-West, and Serbia to the South-West.
Before 1989, Romania was under a communist regime. Ceauşescu’s dictatorship isolated Romania not only politically and culturally, but also economically. In the 1980s, the Romanian borders were strictly controlled. During the communist regime those who had the opportunity to leave the country immigrated mostly to Germany, Hungary, and Israel. The poor living conditions during communism caused the population to revolt against the regime in 1989.
